To be honest, there’s no peer-reviewed research on the matter, so I can’t say for sure. Dr. Mercola has talked about this on his site, and he claims that it’s washing with soap that washes it off, but he provides no real evidence that this has a significant effect. He claims that vitamin D is fat-soluble, so soap would potentially dissolve the oils on your skin where the new vitamin D is dissolved. Taking a dip in plain water won’t wash it off. And I *doubt* that the chlorine in the pool would do anything.

To know for sure, you could get a vitamin D test. If the results come back looking good, then hey, swim away for life! My hunch – you’re fine.

I have heard tho, that if you wash right after exposing your skin to the sun, that the vitamin D can wash away. Living in the SW, my greatest exposure is during my pool time, swimming, laying on float both back and stomach, but getting into the water before, during and after. Does this in fact impact the amount of D that my body can use?
